Manufacturing Guy turns to SEO

What is a guy to do who has 20 years of manufacturing experience, when the state of manufacturing in the US is in serious decline? This is not just sour grapes. The US manufacturing industry has become one of specialized niches in the last 20 years. Frankly, I am disappointed, but not despondent about the change. Farmers have faced steady declines in their numbers for 50 years now, and manage somehow to survive.

Salaries in the Northeast US have actually declined in real income due to inflation, and too many jobs to count have been eliminated, that will never come back.

It is sad that there are so few mold makers and tool and die men left in the country. The main products made in machine shops these days are medical parts, especially implants and medical instruments for orthopedic use, and parts for special machinery. There is still some aircraft, and military work left, but let's not talk about what the 20% declines in the automotive industry have done to manufacturing in the rust belt.

Very little mold or tool and die work is left for the few machine shops that have managed to survive. So it's either wring your hands and bemoan the situation or use your talents to the best of your abilities and learn new skills.

I have always enjoyed technical writing, although most of my efforts in recent years have been in CNC programming. Back in my machine tool days, I was always the one to write product descriptions, and technical documentation, and I always liked it.

With that writing desire, and an "under the hood" understanding of computer hardware and software, it was only natural that I should become interested in the vast world of the Internet. My specific area of interest is mainly SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. Local or nationwide search, specialized keyword research, and web site promotion using WordPress blogs, especially for manufacturers, have now become my passion.
